The Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi, had organized a Guest Lecture on “Extra Pyramidal Symptoms” on 17th June 2023.

The Expert Lecture was delivered by Mr.Anilkumar Jarali, Associate Professor & Head of Department, Dept. of Mental Health Nursing KLE’S Institute Nursing Sciences,Vidyanagar Hubballi. Total 100 UG & 02 PG students were benefitted by the program.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY ON “GENDER EQUALITY” (26/05/2023)

Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi had organized Nukkad Natak on “Gender Equality” for community people at New Vantmuri, Belagavi on 26th May 2023.

Mrs. Sushma Patil Assistant Professor, Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER INS Belagavi and Ms. Parvati Babaladimath Junior Tutor Department of Mental Health Nursing spoke on the importance of “Gender Equality” followed by nukkad natak by BSc (N) III year students. The natak mainly show cased on equal rights to men and women in society, equal right to education for both gender and save the girl child and insure the future equal to male child in the society.

Total 15 students participated in the event and beneficiaries were around 67. Faculties from department of psychiatry nursing & PG students were present.

The Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi, had organized a Guest Lecture on “Forensic Psychiatric Nursing” on 20th March 2023.

REPORT OF HEALTH TALK ON “MENTAL HYGIENE” (23/02/2023)

Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi had conducted a Health talk on “Mental Hygiene” for High School students at Government High School Vantmuri Belagavi on 23rd February 2023.

Mrs. Sushma Patil Assistant Professor, Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER INS Belagavi and Ms. Parvathi Babaladimath Junior Tutor Dept of Mental Health Nursing spoke on the importance of Mental Hygiene among school students and the techniques to be followed for being mentally healthy.

ANGER MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME FOR INMATES OF CENTRAL PRISON HINDALGA BELAGAVI (29/06/2022)

KAHER Institute of nursing sciences, department of mental health nursing has organized a lecture on anger management and role play on ill effects of substance abuse for inmates of central prison Hindlga on 29th June 2022.

The programme started by offering pooja to Gautama Buddha in prayer hall Dr. Sudha A Raddi Principal Institute of nursing sciences was the chief guest for the function she spoke on the importance of anger management for inmates and also suggested to inculcate good habits in life. Mr. Veereshkumar S N Head department of mental health nursing on behalf of institute welcomed the central prison staff by giving saplings.

Shri.Krishnakumar chief superintendent central prison presided over the function and in his presidential remarks he advised the inmates the importance of meditation and spirituality to control the mind. The superintendent had quoted and explained the principles of Gautam Buddha, Dr.B R Ambedkar and JagdguruBasavanna. Shri.Shahbuddin K, Asst.Superintendent, Sri.Arun PSI KSISF, YallappaNaik Jailor and other officials were present for the function. The programme was well coordinated by Mr. ShashikantYadgude Coordinator central prison Belagavi.

Students of KAHER Institute of nursing sciences performed role play on ill effects of substance use which was well appreciated by inmates and the staff of central prison. REPORT OF HEALTH TALK ON “SUICIDE PREVENTION” (09/09/2022)

On occasion of World Suicide prevention Day the Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi in association with Department of Psychiatry JN Medical College Belagavi, had conducted a Health talk on “Suicide Prevention” on the theme “Creating Hope through Actions” at Psychiatry OPD of KLE’S DrParabhakarKoreCharatible Hospital Belagavi on 09th September 2022.

Dr. SandeepPatil, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry JN Medical College, Belagavi spoke on the importance of celebration of World suicide day and its prevention in society & Mr. GururajUdapi, Associate Professor, Department of Mental Health Nursing KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi spoke on the theme “Creating Hope through Actions” with few live examples on how to prevent the situations that lead to commit suicide in one’s life. This was followed by the PG students who spoke on the prevalence and the helpline available for the individuals with suicidal thoughts and feelings. On this occasion, the inmates of the psychiatry ward also shared their life experience’s on how they have cope with the overwhelming situations that lead to devoid of all hopes and suicidal thoughts.

REPORT OF HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON “PREVENTION OF ALZEIMER’S AND ITS COMPLICATIONS” (21/09/2022)

On occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day the Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi in association with NSS Unit of nursing college, had conducted a Health Awareness program on “Prevention of Alzheimer’s and its complications” on the occasion of “World Alzheimer’s Day” at Vantmuri village Belagavi on 21st September 2022.

During the occasion Prof VeereshNandagaon Principal KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi briefed about the theme of World Alzheimer’s Day. The health awareness program was delivered in the form of skit conducted by NSS Volunteers of 3rd Year B.Sc (N) and Mr. GururajUdapi Associate Professor, Dept of Mental Health Nursing KAHER INS Belagavi briefed about the importance of the topic. Mr. ManjuanthSogalad, Mr. AmeyKhande ,Mrs. SushmaPatil, and Mr. SangangoudaShanbhoag were present during the occasion. Around 30 old age clients were benefitted by the program.

REPORT ON OCCASION OF “WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY” (10/10/2022)

On occasion of World Mental Health Day the Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi in association with NSS Unit of Nursing College, had conducted a Health Awareness program on the occasion of “World Mental Health Day” theme at KLE Society’s Raja Lakhamagouda Pre University Science College campus Belagavi on 10th October 2022 from 9 to 11am.

Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi organized a Workshop on “Qualitative Research” on 6th February 2020 at KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi.

The welcome speech was delivered by Prof (Dr) Sudha A Raddi, Dean and Principal KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Amy Szajna, Asst Prof Jefferson College of Nursing, Thomas Jefferson University, Phildelphia USA. And Dr. Patricia Kelly, Associate Dean for Research and Professor, University of Missouri Kansas. (Retired) Research Consultant who were also the Resource Persons for the day & Prof. (Dr). Sudha A. Raddi, Dean & Principal, KLE University’s Institute of Nursing Sciences and some delegates of different constituent units.

The first session was on “Developing interview questions” which was delivered by Dr. Amy Szajna, Asst Prof Jefferson College of Nursing, Thomas Jefferson University, Phildelphia USA. Focused on Basics of Qualitative research, developing interview guide, Different types of interview question and formation of theoretical framework of social Ecological Model. The session was continued by Dr. Patricia Kelly, Associate Dean for Research and Professor, University of Missouri Kansas. (Retired) Research Consultant. She explained the application of theoretical framework of social Ecological Model.

Second session was on “Art of Interviewing” which was delivered by Dr. Amy Szajna, Asst Prof Jefferson College of Nursing, Thomas Jefferson University, Phildelphia USA. Focused on Different types of interviews, Difference between Focus groups and individual interview. Second session was continued by Dr. Patricia Kelly, Associate Dean for Research and Professor, University of Missouri Kansas. (Retired) Research Consultant. She discussed on problems faced during interviewing and solutions for interviewing challenges. Both the resource persons enacted on art of interviewing with a live example.

The first session on “Introduction to Neurotic and Stress related disorders” was delivered by Mr.Manjunath Sogalad Asst. Prof., Dept of Mental Health Nursing KAHER INS Belagavi . The second session of expert lecture was on “Phobic Anxiety Disorders”, which was delivered by Mr. Susheelkumar V. Ronad, Asst. Prof DIMHANS, Dharwad. Mrs. Xavier Belsiya Asst. Prof. and Head of the Department of Mental Health Nursing AIIMS Rishikesh, Uttarakhand rendered an expert session on “Stress Management program”. Last session was on “Obsessive Compulsive Disorders” delivered by Mr. Amey Khande, Asst. Prof., Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi.

INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR (20/08/2020)

KAHER Institute of Nursing Science’s Department of mental health nursing in collaboration with Thomas Jefferson University Philadelphia, USA had organized an international webinar on “psychological First Aid… A multidisciplinary approach” on 19th & 20th August 2020.

We have received overwhelming response in the form of registration from different parts of the world around 1150 participants have registered for this webinar. The participants are from across all the states and universities of India and also from other countries (Dubai, Kuwait, Australia, UK, USA, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia). The faculty and students from various disciplines like Nursing, Medical, Dental, and Engineering and other professions.

Dr. Prabhakar Kore Chancellor KLE Academy of Higher Education & Research Belagavi,and Chairman KLE Society given introductory remarks and appreciated the topic selected for the webinar, he also expressed that the corona virus infection or COVID-19 outbreak is one of the biggest medical challenges to humankind in recent times it has shaken the entire world and created global panic and also said that It is important to address the psychological impact of COVID 19 not only on general population also specifically on health care providers.

On the occasion of World Alzimer’s Day 2018, Department of Mental Health Nursing, KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences, Belagavi organized a Workshop on “Neurological Examination” on 21st September 2018 at KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi.

The Scientific sessions began at 9:30am. In the first session Dr (Prof) Mr. R D Virupaxi Prof & HOD Dept of Anatomy JNMC KAHER Belagavi, delivered an expert lecture on Overview of Nervous System. The second session of expert lecture was on “Neurological Assessment, which was delivered by Dr. Anil Murgod, Asso Prof KIPT KAHER, Belagavi. Mr. Veeresh Nandahgaon Asso. Prof. KAHER INS Belagavi, rendered an expert lecture on “Mental Status Examination”.

In the post lunch session, the first lecture was on “Role of Nurse in Neurological Examination”, delivered by Mr. Manjunath Sogalad. Asst. Prof. Dept of Mental Health Nursing KAHER INS Belagavi, Practical Sessions were carried out and later sessions on Neurological Examination by Faculty of Mental Health Nursing.

REPORT OF School Health on “EFFECTS OF YOGA AND MEDITATION ON MENTAL HEALTH” (21/06/2018)

The Department of Mental Health Nursing, KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research, Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi, had organized a school Health Program on “Effects of Yoga and Meditation on Mental Health” for the School children, at Government Primary School and Higher Secondary School, Kakati (Kannada, Marathi, and Urdu medium) Belagavi on 21st June 2018.

Mr. Gururaj Udapi, Assistant Professor & I/C H.O.D, Dept. of Mental Health Nursing introduced the topic and focused on importance of “Yoga and meditation”. The Lecture was delivered by Mr. Sangangouda Shanabhag, Senior Tutor, Dept of Mental Health Nursing KAHER Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi and Mr. Manjunath Sogalad, Assistant Profgessor, Dept of Mental Health Nursing delivered the vote of thanks. Total 650 School children and Teachers were present during the session and they were also actively involved in the program as followed by the demonstration of Yogasana’s performed by the Yoga teachers of the school.

REPORT OF AWARENESS RALLY PROGRAMME ON “EVE OF WORLD CONSUMERS RIGHTS DAY” (14/03/2017)

On the eve of World Consumers Rights Day K.L.E.U’s Institute of Nursing Sciences Belagavi Department of Mental Health Nursing had organized a rally on Consumers Rights and created awareness regarding the rights of the consumers at Ranakunde Village on 14-03-2017. During the rally students raised slogans with banners in their hands underlining the importance of the drive and distributed the pamphlets regarding the consumer’s rights. Around 400 villagers were benefited by the rally.

The department of mental health nursing aims to prepare nurses to assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurses in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services to the mentally ill patients.

Overview-

Mental health nursing is a profession, possessing its unique history, ideology, knowledge and skills. It provides services to individuals whose primary health needs are related to mental, emotional and developmental problems, especially serious disorders and persistent disabilities.

Psychiatric nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice, employing the wide range of explanatory theories of human behavior as its science and purposeful use of self as its art. It is committed to the maintenance, promotion and restoration of optimal mental health for individuals, families, community groups and society through the use of therapeutic relationships and interventions.

The department of Mental health nursing is enthusiastic to provide quality education to students in graduation and post graduation level, under the supervision of excellent faculty. The department has promised to facilitate both professional and personal growth in the students and the faculty by encouraging and supporting their participation in continuing educational activities.

Aim and Objectives-

» To describe the concept of normal and abnormal behavior.

» To inculcate sense of responsibility and accountability and put in hard and sincere work to excel.

» To describe the management of various mental disorders.

For Postgraduate Course

» Guide a postgraduate to develop capabilities to learn, diagnose and take up research work.

» To explain the dynamics of personality development and human behavior.

» To apply the nursing process approach in caring for the patients with mental disorder.

» To incorporate evidence based nursing practice and identify the areas of research in the field of psychiatric nursing.
